Artists

Art has the Power to Change. Renovation + innovation + collaboration. Add a healthy dose of the arts. Plop that into the heart of Central New York. You’ve got the SALT District. With arts and green technology initiatives flourishing nationwide, a core group of Syracuse visionaries joined forces to revitalize a historic and challenged neighborhood with the power of art to change. Current activities include:
  • redevelopment of two warehouses, designated as mixed-use facilities, including an artist live-work space.
  • construction of a new headquarters for the WCNY regional public broadcasting station, serving 19 CNY counties
  • ongoing revitalization of residential properties within an 8-block area adjacent to the commercial projects, and
  • public spaces in the neighborhood (such as Skiddy Park) considering major design and development changes.
A Unique Opportunity for Artists In the SALT district, you’ll be part of a creative community. Nearly 300 working artists—including Scott Bennet, Mark Rausch, and Juan Cruz—have their studios in the different art centers of Syracuse’s SALT District. The Syracuse area also is home to Jerome Witkin, Tim Green and Carrie Mae Weems. Upon your arrival you will be personally introduced to this community of creative entrepreneurs. Through the Artists Program, artists have a unique opportunity to be part of this new community: a place built on creativity, sustainable development, and respect for the neighborhood’s heritage.
